A Scholar’s Late Bloom: Pursuing a PhD at 40

Life's journey often takes unexpected turns. In my case, my passion for learning persisted regardless of age. While I followed the conventional path through high school and college, pursuing further education later in life presented a significant challenge.

When I developed a deep interest in theology, I was already settled into life as a housewife. The prospect of studying abroad or obtaining an advanced degree seemed impossible on my own. Without sponsorship or scholarships, realizing this dream appeared daunting, but I refused to give up.

The turning point in my life came at 40 when our denomination offered support for me to begin a doctoral program. Unlike the typical trajectory of earning a Ph.D. in one's 20s, I started my studies at 40 and completed my degree at 45. This journey was far from easy, but it became the most valuable period of my life.

This experience taught me two crucial lessons. First, it's never too late to learn. Second, sometimes we need the help and support of others to achieve our dreams. This accomplishment, made possible by the church's assistance, was a great blessing and taught me humility.

My late-blooming academic journey enriched my life immensely, becoming a valuable asset in understanding and helping others. Life may not always go according to plan, but through its twists and turns, we gain deeper wisdom and gratitude.

This experience profoundly influenced my theological thinking and pastoral activities. Through studies begun later in life, I gained a better understanding of the concerns and difficulties faced by people at various life stages. This enabled me to adopt a more empathetic and inclusive attitude as a pastor.

Moreover, as my academic depth increased, my sermons and teachings evolved. I moved beyond simply conveying doctrine to delivering richer, more practical messages that combined diverse life experiences with scholarly insights. This brought new vitality to the church community and positively impacted the spiritual growth of the congregation.

Starting academic pursuits later in life taught me humility and gratitude. It added a new dimension to my ministry and theological research, transcending personal achievement. I continue to apply the lessons learned from this experience to my life and ministry, striving for constant growth and development.
