Brothers Rising from the Shadows of War

Our family's story mirrors the modern history of Korea. Growing up in the aftermath of the Korean War, my brothers and I each carved out our own paths in life.

As the eldest, I initially pursued literature before finding my calling in theology. Looking back, that shift was a pivotal moment in my life. I was a young man trying to understand the world through literature, but ultimately found deeper answers in theology.

My second brother chose philosophy. Always the deep thinker, he taught at universities and high schools, sharing his philosophical insights. Life, however, is unpredictable. He ended up immigrating to the United States, where he started anew. He married a nurse, learned computer skills for a new career, and is now enjoying a comfortable retirement.

The story of our youngest brother always tugs at my heartstrings. Born during the Korean War, he never saw our father's face. While I at least have memories of Dad, he doesn't even have that. But adversity made him stronger. He became a doctor, working as a urologist and later as a medical director at Seoul Adventist Hospital, helping countless people. Now he runs his own clinic, still caring for patients.

Reflecting on our journeys, I feel proud that we all gave our best in our chosen paths. Rising from the ashes of war to find success in our fields speaks to the resilience and determination of our generation. It's truly moving.

Times change, but the value of human will and effort remains constant. Just as we brothers supported each other to get where we are, I've learned that growth comes through collaboration. This experience has been invaluable in my work as a theologian and pastor, helping me understand and support others.

Our family's story transcends personal history, embodying the pain and hope of an era. It's deepened my appreciation for human resilience and family bonds, profoundly influencing my theological thinking and pastoral work. I hope our experiences can inspire hope and courage in future generations.
